Beyonce Career

After a childhood that strongly featured singing and dancing competitions at which she excelled, she eventually found fame in the late 1990s, as the lead singer of the hugely successful girl group ‘Destiny’s Child’. The group ran from 1997-2002, garnering several number-one singles and albums in the process. Number One single releases included ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’, ‘Say My Name’, ‘Bootylicious’, and ‘Survivor’.

After the group parted ways, Beyonce featured on the Jay-Z record ‘03 Bonnie & Clyde’. The two artists became an important power couple and married a few years later. Jay-Z had a strong hand in Beyonce’s debut solo album ‘Dangerously In Love’.

The superb RnB/hip hop classic ‘Cr@zy In Love’, with its infectious brass hook, was her debut single and became her first solo number one. Jay-Z’s succinct rap cameo gave the track an ultra-cool edge and this quality is maintained across the whole album.

Beyonce gets to show her considerable range both vocally and stylistically across this diverse collection of tracks, which also features Sean Paul, Missy Elliott, and Luther Vandross. ‘Baby Boy’ also reached number one while ‘Naughty Girl’ and ‘Me, Myself and I’ reached the top five.

The album eventually sold 11 million records worldwide and this was the album that launched Beyonce into the stratosphere as a superstar, receiving then a record 5 awards at the Grammys that year.

This album was followed up in 2006 with ‘B’Day’, the release of which coincided with her 25th birthday. This diverse collection of tracks takes the general musical styles of the first album and takes it to different places. ‘The Tribal Rhythms’, a production of Deja Vu (feat Jay-Z) was like nothing else she’d ever done and was a top 5 single.

The second single, ‘Irreplaceable’, became a number-one single in several countries, cementing Beyonce’s place as a global star. The funky blues/hip hop hybrid of Suga Mama shows her stretching her wings artistically. ‘B’Day’ spawned 3 more singles and was nominated for 5 Grammys and won the award for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

That year also involved two acting roles, ‘The Latter In Dreamgirls’, a film version of a Broadway musical loosely based on The Supremes. Her third album, released in 2008, ‘I Am… Sasha Fierce’ was further evidence of her creativity. It’s a concept album based on an alter ego she created single: ‘I Am… Sasha Fierce’.

Selling half a million copies in its first week, it featured the number 1 hit Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) and her longest-running Hot 100 single, Halo. This hit, co-written with Ryan Tedder, gave her more top 10 hits than any other female artist in the 2000s. The sixteen-track album sees her continue experimenting with an eclectic range of styles and genres with R&B/hip hop being the dominant sound.

This was followed in 2011 by ‘4’, which became her fourth consecutive number 1 album. This album has a more classic pop-soul sound, as evidenced by the opening track Love On Top, which recalls 80’s era Whitney Houston. This song peaked at 20 on the Billboard 100, the highest peak from the album.

Another successful single was the female anthem ‘Run The World (Girls)’ which is one of her most original and radical-sounding tracks. Beyonce always tries to take her music to the next level, getting both critical acclaim and massive commercial success in the process as the best artists manage to do.

In 2013, she unexpectedly released her fifth studio album ‘Drunk In Love’ and the eponymous title reflected the lyrically personal nature of the album as a  whole. Whilst maintaining the electro-R&B that had become her signature sound, the subjects covered range from bulimia and post-natal depression to the insecurities of marriage which were big subjects for a global pop star to deal with.

Drunk In Love (feat. Jay-Z) hit number 2 on the Billboard 100 and the album’s opening track is one of Beyoncé’s true classics, the epic pop of Pretty Hurts. With a skyscraping vocal melody, she really gets to showcase her considerable vocal prowess on this song. After reaching number one in the album charts for the fifth time, this was the first instance of a woman achieving this feat.

During this period, she also embarked on a huge world tour with her husband, Jay-Z. That year, she received 3 Grammy awards, including two for ‘Drunk In Love’.

It was in 2016, however, that she arguably reached her artistic zenith with the album ‘Lemonade’. First performing the album track Formation at the NFL Super Bowl, the album was released to universal critical acclaim, and rightly so. ‘Lemonade’ captures Beyonce at the peak of her powers, the twelve songs covering a range of styles and featuring artists like Jack White, James Blake, and Kendrick Lamar (who appears on the superb album Highlight Freedom). She became the first artist in history for her first six albums to debut at number 1 and, in fact, every track made the Billboard 200. It received a plethora of awards and accolades, including 2 more Grammys.

After this commercial and artistic high point, Beyonce has been involved in numerous other successful projects in recent years. In 2018, she released the joint album ‘Everything Is Love’ under the name The Carters with her husband Jay-Z.

Then 2019 saw the release of ‘Homecoming’, a live album based on her Coachella performances. That same year, she featured on the soundtrack to ‘The Lion King’ which led to the visual album ‘Black Is King’, based on the music of ‘The Lion King: The Gift’. This premiered globally on Disney in July 2020.

Even after all these years into her hugely successful career, Beyonce continues to diversify and experiment with new forms and styles, marking her out to be one of the most significant artists in the last two decades. She has created a body of work that will stand the test of time.

Beyonce Early Life

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, U.S.A on September 4th, 1981. She and her younger sister Solange were raised by parents Tina Knowles (her Mother) and Mathew Knowles (her Father).

Her father worked as a Sales Manager for Xerox and her mother owned her own Hair Salon. In fact, one of Beyonce’s first jobs was sweeping up hair from the salon floor.

During this time Beyonce was exposed to the music of Anita Baker and Luther Vandross. Some of Beyonce’s earliest audience members were Tina’s customers who would watch Beyonce sing while getting their hair done.

The Knowles family lived in the riverside terrace area of Houston’s third ward. Beyonce recalls having a fun and adventurous childhood while she was shy around strangers. She remained extra close to her family.

The Knowles family apparently attended a Saint John United Methodist Church every Sunday in that same area. While Beyonce certainly doesn’t flaunt any of her religious beliefs. She credits god as the reason for her success.

Beyonce attended Saint Mary’s Montessori School on Rosedale Street. It was here she enrolled in dance and singing classes. Her instructor Darlette Johnson discovered her incredible singing ability after humming the melody of a song. When Beyonce was able to finish it with high-pitched notes, she knew the girl had something.

Darlette apparently told the child that she would one day run the world. Darlette would teach Beyonce dance as part of her class at her own studio. She said that Beyonce would dance so hard sometimes that her costume pieces would fall off.

Rumors of Beyonce’s musical talent followed her all the way into elementary school. Envious students would sometimes bully and tease the singer due to her apparent skills. Her performance at the school’s talent show definitely put salt in that wound.

Hitting the stage to sing a rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, Beyonce floored an audience that included her parents. She took home The School Sammy Award named after the great Sammy Davis Jr. Throughout her early years, Beyonce won between 30 to 40 Talent competitions. She was finally coming out of her shell.
